Common-Sense Bipartisan Reform Plan

• People’s Price Tag Legislation: Require that a price tag be attached before any piece of legislation is considered, telling voters how much it costs, how it affects taxpayers and businesses, and what unfunded costs are passed onto local communities and schools.
✔ Seriously, do you buy anything big before figuring out if you can afford it? Of course not… as all moms and dads in the real world know. Seriously…

• Require an annual report of all unfunded mandates that the state places on local units of government and local schools.
✔ Seriously, would you ever decide to use alternate means of financing – like your 401(k) – to fund your family’s ongoing expenses and fail to keep track of how much it’s draining your funding source? Of course not…as anybody in charge of the family budget knows. Seriously…

• Support no-reason absentee voters and pass the Promote the Vote proposal.
✔ Seriously, would you set up roadblocks if you were trying your darnedest to get voters to vote? Of course not… as every time-strapped parent who’s ever tried and failed to get to the polls knows. Seriously…

• Prohibit legislators, Executive Office staff, or Cabinet officials from becoming registered lobbyists for two years after leaving office or employment.
✔ Seriously, should lawmakers be able to trade their votes if a lobbying firm promises them a well-paying job in exchange, as soon as their term is over? Absolutely not! There should be no question that all votes are in the people’s – not the politicians’ – best interest. Seriously…

• Require that no piece of legislation can be moved without at least one public hearing.
✔ Seriously? Michigan lawmakers can approve bills that affect the lives of real people – and those people are barred from saying anything before they’re passed? That’s like hiring a contractor who agrees to consult you and then does what he wants to do. Seriously…

• Require that Legislators, the Governor and the Lieutenant Governor be covered by Michigan’s Freedom of Information Act.
✔ Seriously? The people we elect – and pay to act in our name and in our best interest – don’t have to tell us what they’re doing? Real people are required to be transparent in their jobs; our elected officials should be too. Seriously…

• Prohibit political candidates from collecting campaign contributions for one office and then using the contributions to run for another office.
✔ Seriously? Candidates for one office can get people to give them money and then siphon off that money to run for a completely different office – whether contributors like it or not? Seriously…

• Require elected officials to receive prior written approval from the Clerk of the House or the Secretary of the Senate for any sponsored trips. All requests should disclose the trip location, dates, purpose, funder, and any other members of the travelling party. All requests must be publicly filed at least seven days before a planned trip.
✔ Seriously? Michigan lawmakers can take swanky trips to Hawaii – paid for by people who are trying to get those lawmakers to approve legislation they want passed? That’s like when regular people are offered free dinners by shysters trying to sell them timeshares. Seriously…

• No bulk taxpayer-funded mailings within three months of an officeholder’s primary election or within three months of a general election.
✔ Seriously? Lawmakers running for re-election can get taxpayers to foot the bill for mailings praising themselves for all their hard work, up to 30 days before an election? Guess what? Taxpayers working to pay their own bills don’t want lawmakers using taxpayer money for election publicity. Seriously…

• Require all legislators to file annual financial disclosure forms upon election to office.
✔ Seriously? Lawmakers charged with representing OUR best interests don’t have to let us know where their money is parked – even though they’re making decisions that could line their own pockets? Love may be blind, but conflicts of interest shouldn’t be. Seriously…
